Illness in God’s World?

When Christians discuss the fact that a friend is ill, talk of miraculous healing often comes to the fore. But why does God plan the world so that we are ill in the first place? Sickness is not confined to humans; every vet knows that. There is also evidence from skeletal remains that illness was a feature of life many tens of thousands of years ago. It has taken many centuries to throw off the idea that sickness is some kind of judgment on our past lives; we now believe that many diseases are caught by infection or contagion, while others have a genetic aspect or are caused by poor diet.

A Christian Perspective

Dr David Webster is a retired GP from Malvern, who has seen many patients in his lifetime and therefore knows something about how we behave when we are ill and dying. He is also a Christian. He will speak of some of the impressions he has gained during his career in general practice, and of how he relates what he has seen to his Christian understanding of the world.

The evening will be split into three short sessions, with time for questions.  You do not need to be either a scientist or a Christian to participate – we aim to make the evenings accessible to all.

Dr David Webster’s Short Biography

David was born of missionary parents in Kenya.  At boarding school in Nairobi, at the age of 12, he first felt God’s presence, and His claim on his life.

At medical school in London (St Thomas’s) he met his wife, Rosemary, a physiotherapy student. In 1967 they went to north-east Uganda as medical missionaries. For 6 years David ran a remote, one-doctor bush hospital, at Amudat in Karamoja District.  For the next three years he worked for the Kenya Government as the M.O.H. in the Marsabit District of northern Kenya.  During the 9 years in east Africa his 4 children were born.

They returned to England in 1976, to General Practice in Upton-upon-Severn. He has been a Reader and Church Warden at Great Malvern Priory. He appreciates the privilege of preaching God’s Word, as well as being a G.P. and being alongside people at their times of greatest need. His faith in Christ gives him purpose to life, meaning to existence, and brings colour to a drab world, to give hope when so much seems bleak.
