The Penultimate Curiosity

Our speaker on Tuesday 16 September 2014 is Professor Andrew Briggs, Professor of Nanomaterials and Director of the Quantum Information Processing Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Oxford.

Prof Andrew Briggs on The Penultimate Curiosity

Prof Andrew Briggs on The Penultimate Curiosity

Don’t worry, he is not going to talk about quantum information! He plans to talk about curiosity, about whether there is anything different about the search for religious truth. If you are curious about big questions, bring a like-minded friend. On the other hand, if you aren’t curious about anything at all, ask yourself why not! The condition could be curable.  Continue reading

Ann Coyle – A Life of Love for God and His Creation

In March this year, many of us lost a faithful and inspiring friend.  As she approached her death, the calm dignity and confidence in God’s loving faithfulness exhibited by Ann Coyle and her family encouraged many of us to grow even deeper in our faith.  We thank the Coyle family and CiS for letting us reproduce the following celebration of Ann’s life of love for God and His creation, published in the CiS PreCiS newsletter earlier this year. We remain indebted to Ann for her part in establishing the Bible and Science Worcester group, that is now affiliated with CiS.

Ann Coyle - A Faithful Friend and Inspiration

Ann Coyle – A Faithful Friend and Inspiration

‘It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ann Coyle, a valued member of the organising committee of the Worcester CiS group. Ann passed away peacefully on the 28th of March following a two year battle with cancer.

Ann always had a strong love for nature and took great delight in all things animal. Much of her life was spent searching for, observing, keeping and teaching about animals; from caterpillars and stick insects to rats, cats and dogs. She loved to discover more about the natural world and found great joy in sharing that passion with others.

Ann fell in love with Jesus whilst at University studying Zoology and Psychology with her focus on animal behaviour. Throughout her life her faith and love for God grew, impacting and encouraging countless others. As her relationship with the Creator deepened, she sought to understand His relationship with His creation and the science which describes it so well.

For many years, Ann’s exploration of the interaction of science and faith was conducted without the benefit of many of the excellent resources available today. As a result, she was passionate in her support of CiS and other groups which facilitate those exploring the science and faith dialogue.

Over the last few years, her support took on a more official role as she helped to build, grow and organise the Worcester ‘Bible and Science’ discussion group which became affiliated with CiS last year. She was a highly valued member of the team and the wider CiS community and will be greatly missed for her organisation, enthusiasm, encouragement, and the unfailing joy and faith with which she praised Jesus in every circumstance.

During the two years of her illness, Ann’s unshakable faith and joy in Jesus became even clearer. She tirelessly went out of her way to love, bless and pray for others, honestly sharing her own struggles and relentlessly praising and glorifying God. Throughout this time particularly, she was a profound inspiration to her many friends and the countless others who heard her story.

Ann’s battle with cancer ended in the profound and joyous knowledge that she had completed the race she had been running with Jesus since she found Him at the age of 19. She died as she had lived, safe in the knowledge that she was in the loving hands of the God who she had known and loved for so many years, seeking to honour and glorify Him in everything she had done.

Whilst there is sadness, there is also great peace for Ann’s family and friends who rejoice with her that she is now, finally, truly home with our Father in heaven, hearing those words, “Well done, good and faithful one”.

Those who have been close to Ann during this time rejoice in the truth of this passage which Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The only victory in this belongs to Jesus and those who choose to share in it.

Ann will be fondly remembered as a passionate nature-lover, a caring friend, a tireless and efficient worker, a loving wife and mother and so much more. Above all, Ann’s life beautifully reflected the love she had for God and the joy she knew in knowing His love for her. We rejoice with her as she celebrates with the One who made her.’

Did Evolution have to end with Human Beings?

Are we becoming more intelligent, bigger, stronger, more savage, or what – in short, are we still evolving? If so – should we regard ourselves as simply some accidental by-product of nature? At the final Bible and Science Worcester Talk in our current series, Simon Conway Morris, a Christian and Professor of Palaeobiology at Cambridge University argues not.

Addiction – The Divided Self! 15 October 2013

Invitation Summary to Prof Chris Cook

Addiction – The Divided Self: 15 October 2013

Addiction – A Broad Phenomenon

Addiction is a very broad phenomenon, from noted examples of physical dependence on drugs, alcohol and nicotine, to the possibly more psychological addictions to gambling, hoarding junk, compulsive shopping, etc.  No previous generation has been exposed to the commercial advertising pressures we face today, or the pressure to conform sometimes exerted through social networking.

The Speaker – Professor Chris Cook

Professor Chris Cook of Durham University is both a psychiatrist and a university chaplain, being attached to the theology Department.

Psychiatric Models of Addiction & Spiritual Insights

He will describe current psychiatric models of addiction and look at the possible spiritual roots and the insights he gains from his Christian faith.  He may help us to understand people who have experienced pressures we have fortunately been spared, but which drove others to addictive behaviour. Why not invite someone along who wants to ditch their own habit? It won’t be a cure, but it could be a start.

The evening will be split into three short sessions, with time for questions.  You do not need to be either a scientist or a Christian to participate – we aim to make the evenings accessible to all.

A Brief Introduction To Professor Cook

Professor Cook trained first in medicine, at St George’s Hospital Medical School in London, qualifying in 1981, and then specialised as a postgraduate in psychiatry at the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guys and St Thomas’s, also in London. He has been a Lecturer at University College, London (1987 to 1990) and Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, London (1994 to 1997) as well as being Professor of the Psychiatry of Alcohol Misuse at the University of Kent from 1997 to 2003.  He is also an ordained Anglican priest with an MA in Applied Theology, and is currently Director of the Project for Spirituality, Theology & Health at Durham University.

His studies have looked at the genetic effects upon the predisposition to alcohol misuse and dependence, as well at treatment approaches, such as those based in the mutual help movement, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and those with religious roots, as well as those that are more medically based.

Is Free Will An Illusion? 17 September 2013

Sam Harris Poster 17 Sept 2013

Can We Truly Exercise Free Will?

Some scientists argue that we are not responsible for the way we behave, rather that our actions are a combination of genetic disposition, upbringing, experiences, illness and traumas. As a result, it has been argued that we have no choice in what we do.
Indeed, this idea is already acknowledged in the British legal system where the partial defence of ‘diminished responsibility’ can lessen a punishment. We also recognise the traumatising effects on soldiers and victims from war zones and crime, and the character-changing effects of some illnesses  and brain damaging accidents.

Dr Sam Harris Argues for ‘Free Will Being An Illusion’

Dr Sam Harris is leading proponent of the ‘Free Will Is An illusion’ argument. Dr Harris is a neuroscientist and science journalist, Dr Sam Harris. On the 17th September we will watch a presentation in which he argues that organised religions lose their point if we believe we are not responsible for the way we behave.

Prof Geoff Pritchard – A Christian Perspective on Free Will

The presentation will be briefly introduced by Professor Geoff Pritchard, who will then give a short summary of theological support for people being able to exercise Free Will.

What Do You Think?

This will be followed by an open discussion, led by Chris Shepherd, where you can air your views.
We look forward to seeing you. Please also feel free to pass on these details to anyone you feel would be interested.
